The Miami Marlins have reached a preliminary agreement with 16-year-old Robinson Canó Jr., son of eight-time MLB All-Star Robinson Canó, for a $1 million signing bonus as part of the club's 2028 international signing class, according to reports.

MLB rules allow international amateur free agents to sign between Jan. 15 and Dec. 15 of their signing class year, provided they turn 17 before Sept. 1 of that year. Canó Jr., a highly regarded right-handed batting shortstop from the Dominican Republic, meets those eligibility requirements.

His father, Robinson Canó, played 17 seasons in the majors, primarily with the New York Yankees, earning eight All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves, 2,639 hits, 335 home runs, and a World Series title in 2009. He later signed a major free-agent contract with the Seattle Mariners (2014-18) and finished his career with 68.7 WAR. Two suspensions for performance-enhancing drugs make his Hall of Fame prospects unlikely. He last appeared in the majors in 2022 with the Atlanta Braves.

Canó Jr. is also the grandson of José Canó, who played for the 1989 Houston Astros, positioning him to become a third-generation major leaguer.
