David Bednar Receives Qualifying Offer; Jazz Chisholm Jr. Does Not, Yankees Face Second Base Question
Other Sports · 11:53:03 - Saturday, 7 November 2026

Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar has received a qualifying offer for the 2027 season, while New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was not extended a qualifying offer, according to reports from Last Word on Sports.

The decisions leave the Yankees with a significant question at second base heading into the offseason. Chisholm, who joined New York via trade during the 2024 season, hit a solo home run against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium on September 1, 2026, but his future with the club is now uncertain after the team declined to tender him the one-year qualifying offer worth approximately $21.05 million.

Bednar, a two-time All-Star reliever, will have the option to accept the qualifying offer and remain with Pittsburgh for another season or test free agency. The Pirates' decision to extend the offer reflects their desire to retain the right-hander, who has been one of the National League's most reliable closers when healthy.

For the Yankees, the non-tender of a qualifying offer to Chisholm means they will not receive draft pick compensation if he signs with another team. New York must now explore internal options, free agency, or the trade market to address the second base position for 2027.
