Olympic gold medalist Jessie Diggins has revealed the depths of her battle with an eating disorder, saying the condition nearly cost her life. The 35-year-old cross-country skier described the experience as "the lowest moment of my entire life" and credited professional help with saving her.
Diggins, who won gold in the team sprint at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, shared her story in an interview published Thursday. She explained how the disorder "took over" her brain and emphasized that without intervention, "I would've died."
The American athlete's disclosure highlights the pressures faced by elite competitors and the importance of mental health support in sports. Diggins hopes her openness will encourage others to seek help.
