Former Premier League striker Billy Sharp has come out of retirement to join AFC Rushden & Diamonds, a phoenix club aiming for a historic FA Cup upset. The 38-year-old forward, who previously played for Sheffield United and Leeds United, signed with the non-league side in a bid to help them progress in the competition.
Sharp's return to competitive football comes as the club, formed after the dissolution of Rushden & Diamonds in 2011, seeks to make a mark in the FA Cup. The team currently competes in the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands, several tiers below the professional leagues.
According to BBC Sport, Sharp is targeting a landmark goal that could propel the club into the later rounds of the tournament. The FA Cup is renowned for giant-killing acts, and AFC Rushden & Diamonds hope to add another chapter to that tradition.
The club's management expressed excitement about Sharp's experience and leadership, noting his prolific scoring record at higher levels. Sharp himself said he was motivated by the challenge and the opportunity to contribute to the club's ambitious project.
