Chicago Bears Rushing Attack Declines Ahead of Seahawks Test

Chicago Bears Rushing Attack Declines Ahead of Seahawks Test

The Chicago Bears still lead the NFL in rushing with a 154.3-yard average, but their ground game has stalled over the last three games. After averaging nearly 200 yards in their first four contests, the Bears managed a combined 295 rushing yards against the Packers, Falcons and Patriots — fewer than 100 per game. Chicago won the last two games behind quarterback Caleb Williams, who threw for over 300 yards in each, but Monday's matchup at Seattle will test whether the offense can sustain success without a consistent run game.

The dip coincides with running back Kyle Monangai's toe injury. Monangai rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns against the Jets in his last appearance. Since then, D'Andre Swift has shouldered a heavier load, gaining 78 yards on 22 carries against New England, but he has not topped 100 yards since the season opener. The Bears signed Zavier Scott and have used Roschon Johnson more, yet the backfield lacks the rotation that powered the early-season surge.

Williams acknowledged Seattle's defense forces offenses to be patient, limiting deep plays and pressuring the quarterback with four rushers. A reliable running game would create manageable downs and prevent the Seahawks from focusing solely on the pass. Coach Johnson also warned that penalties have compounded Chicago's struggles, and the loss of tight end Cole Kmet to a season-ending injury removes a key blocker. Rookie Sam Roush and lineman Ozzy Trapilo are expected to fill the void.

The Bears do not need to match their season average to beat Seattle, but they must generate timely runs on early downs and after penalties to give Williams options. The game will reveal whether the recent decline is a temporary slump or a problem that must be solved for a playoff push.
