The Denver Broncos sit at 5-2 but rank 24th in scoring offense (20.6 points per game), 30th in total offense (270.0 yards per game) and 26th in yards per play (4.7). Quarterback Bo Nix, the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has posted career lows in completion percentage (59.2%), passing yards per game (181.6), air yards per attempt (5.7) and passer rating (80.7) through seven games in 2026.
Nix’s best outing came in a Week 7 win over the Arizona Cardinals, where he threw for 222 yards and a touchdown and rushed for a 62‑yard touchdown, the longest by a Broncos quarterback. However, his average air yards per attempt is the lowest since Drew Brees’ final season in 2020, and his expected points added per dropback is -0.08.
The Broncos’ defense, led by 2024 Defensive Player of the Year Pat Surtain II, co‑leads the league with 21 sacks and has generated 10 takeaways, eight in second halves, fueling comeback wins. Denver averages 7.1 points in the first half and 13.4 in the second half, with Nix posting a 71.1 passer rating before halftime and 92.1 after.
Nix will be eligible for a multi‑year extension in the 2027 offseason. Spotrac projects a market value of $52 million per year on a three‑year, $156 million deal. Analysts warn that committing to a quarterback with a limited downfield game at age 26 could cripple the Broncos’ Super Bowl window, especially if the defense regresses.
General manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton have time to explore alternatives via the 2027 draft, free agency or trades, avoiding a scenario similar to the Miami Dolphins’ costly extension of Tua Tagovailoa.
