Clemson's Offensive Collapse Under Dabo Swinney Leaves Tigers Struggling
World Sports · 14:48:40 - Friday, 30 October 2026

Clemson's once‑high‑powered offense has plummeted to the bottom of the FBS rankings, and head coach Dabo Swinney's frustration was on full display during the Tigers' loss to Virginia Tech. Swinney was seen clutching a large playsheet on the sideline, fueling speculation about his relationship with offensive coordinator Chad Morris, who returned to the program this season to revive the attack.

Under Swinney, Clemson was a quarterback factory that produced Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence in consecutive years. Since former coordinator Tony Elliott departed in 2021, the Tigers have cycled through Brandon Streeter and Garrett Riley before reverting to Morris. The results are stark: Clemson ranks 138th out of 138 teams in passing touchdowns this season, has not thrown a touchdown pass in four games, and sits 115th nationally in passing yards per game. The team has more interceptions (seven) than passing touchdowns and has gone 164 dropbacks without a score.

Against Virginia Tech, Clemson managed only one offensive touchdown and three first‑half points. Swinney told ESPN at halftime, "It's all coaching... Pitiful. Pitiful. 100% coaching. That ain't the players, that's us." After the game he added, "I just don't think we helped them enough to win the game with some decisions and play calls." Swinney confirmed Sunday that Morris will remain offensive coordinator for the rest of the season.

Advanced metrics underscore the struggle: Clemson is 126th in success rate (37.6%), 136th in EPA per play (-0.10), 130th in yards per play (4.85), and has allowed 21 sacks (123rd nationally). The Tigers have reached the red zone 23 times in seven games but rank 104th in red‑zone scoring. Starting running back Gideon Davidson was benched in the second half for what Swinney called "undisciplined" play, and the quarterback competition between Tait Reynolds and injured freshman Christopher Vizzina remains unresolved.

With five games left — including matchups against Florida State, Syracuse, Duke, and Georgia Tech — Clemson's remaining schedule is considered a series of toss‑ups, a far cry from the program's recent dominance in the ACC. The offensive futility highlights how far the Tigers have fallen from their championship peak.
