The 43rd Breeders' Cup Classic headlines Saturday's championship racing at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, with a $7 million purse and a 1¼-mile distance. Post time is 6:16 p.m. ET on NBC.
The field of eight includes Japanese superstar Forever Young, the defending champion and 2-1 morning-line favorite, seeking to become only the second horse to win the Classic twice. He faces 2025 Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty (5-2), the reigning Horse of the Year who will retire after this race, and 2026 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo (5-1). This marks the first time since 1991 that two Kentucky Derby winners have met in the Classic.
Other contenders include Bill Mott-trained Knightsbridge (9-2), who earned a 122 Beyer Speed Figure winning the Monmouth Cup, and Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo (15-1). The Puma (10-1), Magnitude (6-1, scratched), and T O Password (30-1) complete the field.
The outcome will heavily influence year-end awards. A Golden Tempo victory would likely secure Champion 3-Year-Old Male and Horse of the Year honors, while a win by Forever Young, Sovereignty, or Knightsbridge would put them at the forefront.
SportsLine experts Gene Menez, Michelle Yu, and Jeff Hochman have released their wagering strategies, with Menez and Yu both looking past the top two favorites, and Hochman fading Forever Young.
The road to the Classic featured key preps: Forever Young's Saudi Cup win and Dubai World Cup loss, Sovereignty's rebound in the Whitney Stakes, Golden Tempo's Triple Crown sweep, Knightsbridge's dominant Monmouth and Pacific Classic victories, and Napoleon Solo's Preakness win and subsequent seconds.
