Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg has produced a historic start to his NBA career, averaging 22.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists through his first five games.
The 23‑year‑old became the first Warriors rookie since Stephen Curry to score at least 25 points in three consecutive games. He is also the first rookie in nearly 70 years to record 100-plus points, 45-plus rebounds and 20-plus assists in his first five contests, joining Larry Bird as the only players in NBA history to reach those thresholds.
Head coach Steve Kerr has called Lendeborg “100%” the most pro‑ready rookie he has ever coached, trusting him with heavy minutes and offensive responsibility. During Lendeborg’s minutes the Warriors’ offense carries a top‑five rating, and Kerr said the team puts the ball in his hands at critical moments.
Lendeborg’s all‑around game includes elite positional size, three‑point shooting (8‑of‑12 on spot‑ups), transition power, pick‑and‑roll creation and strong rebounding. In a win over Denver he posted 31 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, then used his post‑game interview to seek advice from veterans such as Vince Carter, Carmelo Anthony and Tracy McGrady.
The rookie’s immediate impact has sparked discussion about whether the Warriors should accelerate their contention timeline. Analysts have suggested trade scenarios involving Draymond Green, Kristaps Porziņģis or other assets to add a third star alongside Curry and Lendeborg, though the front office must weigh mortgaging future draft capital.
After a string of disappointing draft picks since 2018, Golden State appears to have landed a potential franchise cornerstone. If Lendeborg sustains this level, he could reshape both the present and future of the Curry era.
