CAF Reverses Decision, Africa Cup of Nations Returns to Biennial Cycle

CAF Reverses Decision, Africa Cup of Nations Returns to Biennial Cycle

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reversed its decision to hold the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) every four years, reinstating the tournament's traditional two-year cycle.

In December, CAF announced a shift to a four-year cycle and planned an African Nations League as a biennial replacement, but acknowledged the new competition would take several years to become financially self-sufficient.

"The decision by the Executive Committee to reinstate the organisation of the Afcon every two years aims to advance, protect and promote the interests of African football and the 54 CAF Member Associations, as well as those of African players playing for clubs outside the continent," CAF president Patrice Motsepe said.

The biennial schedule has long clashed with the European club calendar, and FIFA's expanded 32-team Club World Cup held in June and July last year forced CAF to schedule Afcon mid-season.

The next Afcon will take place in 2027, jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, followed by editions in 2028, 2031 and 2033. There will be no tournament in 2030 due to the World Cup.

The 2025 Afcon final saw Senegal initially crowned champions before being stripped of the title three months later in favor of Morocco.
