After sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with only seven points at the World Cup break, the Philadelphia Union have engineered one of the most remarkable turnarounds in MLS history. Under interim head coach Ryan Richter, the team has collected 40 points in the second half of the season — 12 wins, four draws and a single loss — to secure a place in the MLS Cup playoffs with a scoreless draw at Nashville SC.
Tactical Shift
Richter moved the side away from the high‑press system used by predecessor Bradley Carnell, adopting a zonal press that conserves midfield energy and allows the team to maintain intensity for 90 minutes. The return of left‑back Kai Wagner and the presence of towering centre‑back Neil Pierre, comfortable in one‑on‑one situations, have given the defence a solid foundation in front of three‑time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Andre Blake.
Attacking Spark
Seventeen‑year‑old Cavan Sullivan has been the catalyst, contributing seven goals and 11 assists since the break, while forward Milan Iloski leads the league’s American scorers with 19 goals and seven assists. Uruguayan striker Bruno Damiani has added 12 goals, providing depth that makes the Union difficult to contain.
With two regular‑season games remaining, the Union could face Inter Miami in the first playoff round if standings hold. Regardless of the opponent, the team’s "next‑man‑up" mentality and tactical cohesion suggest they will be a dangerous postseason contender.
