Kimi Antonelli: From Garage to Youngest Formula 1 World Champion

Italian driver Kimi Antonelli has become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history at age 20, dominating his second season with Mercedes after a remarkable rise from karting prodigy to title winner.

Early Years in the Garage

Antonelli's father Marco, a former touring car driver, recalls his son being "born in a garage" – exposed to engines from 15 days old. At age three, Kimi showed instinctive car control on a simulator, and by 10 he managed oversteer in a Lamborghini at 320 km/h during a father-son test at Adria.

Rapid Ascent Through the Ranks

Mercedes academy scout Gwen Lagrue spotted Antonelli at 11. He swept Formula 4 titles in 2022 and the Formula Regional European Championship in 2023. Despite initial reluctance from Marco due to his own career setbacks, Mercedes secured his path to F1.

F1 Debut and Championship Year

After Lewis Hamilton's departure for Ferrari, Toto Wolff promoted Antonelli for 2025. A testing programme revealed exceptional adaptability, though his rookie season included crashes at Monza and a mid-year slump. In 2026, Antonelli took six poles and six wins in the first 11 races, building a 50-point lead. He overcame an engine penalty to win the Italian Grand Prix from 19th on the grid, sealing the title in Mexico.

Mentality and Support

Antonelli credits his father as his "rock" and drew advice from tennis legend Roger Federer on managing pressure. Wolff praises his balanced focus and maturity, noting the "typical Italian family" environment. The champion's turnaround from rookie struggles to dominant form has surprised even his team.
