Oklahoma City Thunder Explore Trade Options Amid Injury Crisis, Eye Former Players Like Ty Jerome

The Oklahoma City Thunder are facing a significant injury crisis that has sidelined most of their core rotation from last season. Aside from star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, key players such as Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, Alex Caruso, Chet Holmgren, and Ajay Mitchell are currently unavailable. This situation has sparked trade speculation, especially given the Thunder's abundance of draft assets and an open roster spot.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst fueled rumors on his Hoop Collective podcast, suggesting cryptically that if the Thunder acquire a player, "it would not be a surprise if they acquire a player they've already had." The Thunder's culture-focused front office may prefer reacquiring familiar faces over integrating new ones.

Players Ruled Out or Impractical

Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe, and Aaron Wiggins were traded last offseason and cannot be reacquired until next season under NBA rules. Other former Thunder stars like Domantas Sabonis ($45.5 million salary), Kevin Durant, Jerami Grant ($34.8 million), James Harden, and Steven Adams are either too expensive, vital to their current teams, or poor fits for Oklahoma City's defensive system and frontcourt depth.

Former All-Stars Unlikely to Return

Russell Westbrook (retired, 37) and Chris Paul (retired, 41) are high-maintenance additions unlikely to accept reduced roles. Victor Oladipo (34, hasn't played since 2022-23) and Al Horford (38, with Golden State) are theoretically available but face fit or cost issues. Paul George would require trading Jalen Williams, which is highly improbable. Josh Giddey's $25 million salary creates cap complications, and Dennis Schröder, while affordable via a trade exception, may not warrant a move unless the situation worsens.

Best Fits: Ousmane Dieng and Ty Jerome

Two former Thunder players stand out as realistic targets. Ousmane Dieng, drafted one spot ahead of Jalen Williams in 2022, has shown promise with increased playing time for the Milwaukee Bucks last season. He cannot be traded until December 15 due to his recent free-agent signing. Ty Jerome is having a breakout season with the Memphis Grizzlies (29.8 PPG, 6.5 APG) on a ~$9 million expiring contract. His shooting and ball-handling fit Oklahoma City's needs, and the Thunder have experience managing high-impact players with durability concerns like Alex Caruso. Whether Memphis views Jerome as a long-term piece or a sell-high candidate will determine if a deal materializes.
