Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson returned to the Week 8 Thursday Night Football matchup against the Carolina Panthers in the third quarter after leaving the game in the first half with a chest injury. Watson was transported to a hospital near Lambeau Field for precautionary tests and was back at the stadium shortly after halftime. The team initially listed him as questionable, but he was cleared to re-enter the contest.
Watson arrived back at Lambeau Field in an ambulance and spent about three minutes in the locker room preparing to return. He emerged on the sideline with additional padding around his ribs and indicated the injury was on the lower right side of his chest. After the game, Watson told Prime Video's Kaylee Hartung that he had spit up blood on the play, which triggered the medical staff to send him to the hospital. Tests ruled out internal bleeding, allowing him to play.
The injury occurred on a 53-yard reception that set up Green Bay's second touchdown. Watson collided with Panthers cornerback Will Lee III, who was also injured and ruled doubtful to return with a hamstring issue. Before exiting, Watson led all receivers with six catches for 100 yards in the first half, helping quarterback Jordan Love complete 17 of his first 20 passes. Upon his return, Watson added two receptions in the fourth quarter, including a key third-down conversion that helped the Packers run out the clock.
In Watson's absence, rookie Matthew Golden caught a touchdown pass and Tucker Kraft scored the Packers' first touchdown. Watson has an extensive injury history that includes a previous chest injury, three hamstring strains, an ankle sprain, three knee bruises, an ACL tear, and a concussion during his 2022 rookie season. He has missed 20 games across five NFL seasons and has yet to play a full season.
