The College Football Playoff Selection Committee will unveil its first top 25 rankings of the 2026 season on Tuesday night, offering an early look at the teams in the national championship conversation. Committee chair Hunter Yurachek, the Arkansas athletic director, leads a 13-member group that includes athletic directors from Nebraska, Appalachian State, Utah, Middle Tennessee, and Virginia, along with former head coaches Mark Dantonio, Gus Malzahn, Mike Riley, and Jeff Tedford, plus Randall McDaniel, Wesley Walls, and Ivan Maisel.
Selection Committee and Metrics
The committee ignores AP and Coaches polls, recruiting rankings, and NFL Draft buzz. Each member privately submits a list of 30 teams they consider the best, and a master pool is created from teams appearing on three or more lists. Evaluation then centers on on-field performance, data points, resume and record strength, game control, schedule toughness, head-to-head results, common opponents, and player or coach availability. A new conference strength metric has been added this season to better contextualize schedule difficulty, particularly within the SEC.
Playoff Implications and Historical Trends
The playoff bracket comprises the five highest-ranked conference champions plus the next seven highest-ranked at-large teams. The top four seeds earn a first-round bye, while seeds 5-8 host opening-round games. As an independent, Notre Dame has a playoff assurance if ranked inside the final top 12. Unbeaten Miami is poised to become the 11th team to reach No. 1 in the CFP rankings. Two top-10 teams, Ohio State and UCLA, are without their starting quarterbacks — Julian Sayin and Nico Iamaleava — which could lead the committee to downgrade them. Historical data shows teams inside the initial top six have a 92% chance of making the final 12-team field, while all at-large selections in the past two seasons appeared inside the top 18 of the first rankings. Notably, 50% of teams ranked 1-4 in the initial rankings did not finish in the top four, and Miami (2024) is the only team to be ranked in the top six initially and miss the playoff entirely.
