CBS Sports Ranks NFL's Top New Coordinators at Midseason 2026: Jonathan Gannon Leads Defensive Masterclass
Other Sports · 06:18:54 - Thursday, 5 November 2026

CBS Sports has released its midseason ranking of the NFL's best new coordinators for the 2026 season, with Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon taking the top spot after a remarkable first half despite significant injuries and a struggling offense.

Top Three Coordinators

Gannon's Packers defense ranks 10th in scoring (20.5 points per game allowed) and 10th in total yards (314.9 per game) while spending a league-high 31:36 average time on the field due to the NFL's worst rushing offense (60.6 yards per game). Without star edge rusher Micah Parsons (torn ACL) and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (torn Achilles), Gannon has developed Lukas Van Ness into a career-high 4.5 sacks and maximized safety play with Xavier McKinney (three interceptions) and Evan Williams (two interceptions, one fumble recovery). Packers safety Javon Bullard praised Gannon's aggressive play-calling and confidence.

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Patrick Graham ranks second, reviving a unit that leads the NFL in sacks (26) and ranks third in scoring defense (18.0 points allowed), third in run defense (83.9 yards), and second in red zone defense (37.5% touchdown rate). T.J. Watt has 7.5 sacks in eight games, tying the league lead. The Steelers held the Cleveland Browns to season lows of six points and 34 rushing yards in Week 8.

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing ranks third, guiding the league's No. 3 scoring offense (29.0 points per game) with a Pro Bowl-laden roster. Petzing has unlocked running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who recorded his third 150-yard rushing game of the season, and employed creative formations such as lining up Amon-Ra St. Brown 10 yards behind the quarterback for a key first down.

Other Top-10 Coordinators

San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris (4th) oversees the NFL's No. 6 scoring defense (19.9 points) and No. 5 run defense (86.8 yards) despite a negative time-of-possession margin. Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy (5th) has shifted the offense around Kenneth Walker III, who ranks third in rushing yards (770) and second in yards per carry (5.5), though the passing game needs reinforcement.

New York Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy (6th) has managed three different starting quarterbacks — Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston, and J.J. McCarthy — to a 14th-ranked scoring offense (23.3 points), while Giants defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson (7th) deploys the league's third-highest blitz rate (41.9%) to limit opponents to 6.1 yards per pass attempt, the second-lowest in the NFL.

Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg (8th) maintains a top-half scoring defense (21.6 points) without Myles Garrett, using a "Moneyball" pass rush with 11 players recording at least one sack. Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Brian Fleury (9th) has kept Jaxon Smith-Njigba on a historic pace (900+ receiving yards, 9+ touchdowns in eight games) despite quarterback Sam Darnold's struggles and injuries to both top running backs. Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle (10th) led a No. 7 scoring offense (29.0 points) with Lamar Jackson healthy, but the unit has averaged 15.8 points in his absence.

Honorable mentions include New York Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, and Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.
