NFL Week 8 Lessons: Bears Join Elite Contenders, Chiefs Face Critical Flaws
World Sports · 06:17:53 - Thursday, 5 November 2026

The NFL's Week 8 delivered a slate of surprises, including five double-digit comeback victories — the most in a single week this season — and a statement win by the Chicago Bears that vaulted them into top-tier Super Bowl contention.

1. Bears emerge as top-tier Super Bowl contenders

Chicago's 34-17 dismantling of the reigning-champion Seahawks showcased a defense that allowed just 3.0 yards per play with Jeffery Simmons on the field, down from a league-worst 6.3 yards per play entering the game. Simmons recorded six tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss, and a pass breakup in his debut. Quarterback Caleb Williams was efficient with no turnovers and one sack, posting 7.3 yards per attempt — the best against Seattle this season. The Bears' supporting cast, including wide receivers Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze, and an outstanding offensive line, complemented star power at quarterback and defense.

2. Lions remain a serious NFC threat

Detroit's 19-15 win over the Vikings highlighted an offense ranking third in EPA per play and success rate, with Jared Goff throwing 15 touchdowns against one interception. The offensive line ranks third in run blocking and fourth in pass blocking per PFF. The defense has improved since the bye week, with Brian Branch's return and Aidan Hutchinson leading the pass rush.

3. Chiefs must address multiple flaws before trade deadline

Kansas City's loss to the Broncos exposed conservative game management by Andy Reid, including a fourth-quarter punt on fourth-and-inches and a missed 54-yard field goal. The Chiefs convert only 62.5% of short-yardage opportunities (23rd in NFL) and lack a downfield threat, with Patrick Mahomes completing no passes of 20+ yards in three straight games. The receiving corps needs reinforcement, and the team has draft capital to make a move.

4. Adonai Mitchell breaks out for Jets

Acquired in the Sauce Gardner trade, Mitchell caught seven passes for 142 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders, setting a career high. His performance suggests the trade has become even more lopsided in New York's favor.

5. Gregory Rousseau enters Defensive Player of the Year conversation

Despite playing only 30 snaps in a blowout win over the Ravens, Rousseau recorded seven pressures and a sack. Through eight weeks he leads the NFL with 46 pressures, is tied for most quarterback hits (22), and ranks third in pressure rate (20.4%) with seven sacks and three forced fumbles.

6. Alternate uniforms draw criticism

The Lions' and Jaguars' alternate uniforms were panned for clashing designs, with the Lions' set resembling a laundry mishap and the Jaguars' helmets clashing with the rest of the kit. Both were deemed inferior to the Bills' widely criticized "Nickel City" uniforms from Week 3.
