FA and WSL Launch Investigation into ACL Injuries in Women's Football
World Sports · 18:43:15 - Saturday, 7 November 2026

The Football Association (FA) and the Women's Super League (WSL) have announced a joint investigation into the prevalence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in women's football. The initiative aims to understand the causes behind the high rate of such injuries among female players and to develop preventive strategies.

The announcement comes amid growing concern over the number of top-level players sidelined by ACL tears. England captain Leah Williamson ruptured her ACL in 2023, highlighting the issue at the highest level of the game. The investigation will examine factors including training loads, pitch surfaces, footwear, and physiological differences to identify risk factors specific to women's football.
